Leeuwenburg was designed in the 1970s by Dutch architect Piet Zanstra for ING bank. At nearly 64,000sqm, it stood for many years as the largest office building in Amsterdam. Its expressive façade and distinctive stepped form have made it something of an iconic Brutalist monument.

 

Following its acquisition by Vastint Netherlands, we were appointed to work alongside ZZDP Architecten and MOSS, makers of green spaces, to redefine the strategic vision, for multiple occupancy functions and masterplan for the site.

 

Located a stone’s throw from the major transport hub of Amstel Station and the Amstel River, the project presented an opportunity to reposition the existing office building as a more contemporary, experience-led mixed-use destination.

 

Our brief focused on developing a strategy for -1, Ground Floor and First Floor, exploring viable uses, adjacencies and opportunities in collaboration with the commercial team and local letting agents, while building support from the municipality. We also assessed the building’s vertical and horizontal circulation and developed an initial servicing strategy, helping to ensure the existing structure could adapt to and support a more complex mixed-use offer.

 

In July 2026 the project received consent for the permit under the Environment and Planning Act and is now undergoing significant and sensitive renovation with a target completion of 2030. We continue to support Vastint Netherlands , Vastint Development and the local Design team on this project with the design & delivery of the Business Lounge & conference & meeting spaces located in the ground floor of the building.
